Growing sales of electric vehicles (EVs) may slow down

NEW MUMBAI : Growing sales growth of electric vehicles (EVs), especially in the two- and three-wheeler categories, which have seen several launches in the recent past, may slow down as such bikes caught fire recently. Security norms have tightened. Government-appointed testing agencies are understood to be tweaking the parameters for such vehicles, especially to avoid overheating of lithium-ion batteries and flames.

The government has already set the toughest benchmark for electric vehicles.

NITI Aayog CEO Amitabh Kant said, "India has the world's strictest testing standard, AIS 156, which includes fire resistance testing, where the battery is subjected to direct and indirect flame for more than two minutes." "Manufacturers voluntarily ensure that all of their batteries are certified to this standard."

The country is also working with the United Nations on testing the new R136 standard and batteries in the topics being discussed. "We can see these being adopted in India very soon," Kant said.

Hero Electric CEO Sohinder Gill said that AIS 156 may be more suited for European climatic conditions rather than high temperatures in India.

“New electric vehicle product launches will certainly be delayed but it will only ensure safe products for the customers. "Almost all lithium-ion cells are imported, so the testing of each cell must be traced during assembly," Kant said. “There is a need to strengthen the battery management system and the industry (battery and vehicle OEMs) should come together to define minimum parameters and self-declaration of compliance.”

Experts said that to reduce the risk of fire and preserve consumer confidence, EV manufacturers should recall models involved in such incidents until they resolve battery-related issues.

Kant said, “OEMs (auto and battery) dealing with such issues generally recall vehicles belonging to the batch affected by such issues to ensure that any issues are addressed at the time without loss of life or property. But it can be fixed."

Manufacturers feel that since India is a price-sensitive market, the nascent category may not be able to support the increased cost of active cooling solutions, which are commonly used in electric passenger vehicles. The challenge for two wheelers and three wheelers is the paucity of space to install the cooling system. Experts said swapping out the battery, which allows the vehicle to cool when it is charged outside, could be a better solution for India.
